Gimli, mittens, women’s or men’s size – pattern

Gimli = a town in Manitoba, Canada, founded by Icelandic settlers

Traditional stranded colourwork mittens with Latvian braids and simple ribbing. The pattern is irregular but easy. Long floats occur only in a few places, and they can be caught every third stitch at the back. Please note that the right and left mittens have different charts, so the houses are mirrored and together the backs of the hands form a little cluster of houses 😊.

These mittens honour the Icelanders who emigrated to North America before 1900 and had to learn new ways of farming and live in a completely different climate from the one they were used to.

Yarn: Náttúruprjón hand-dyed yarn, 85% merino / 15% nylon, 100 g / 400 m.

Needles: Double-pointed needles 3 mm [US 2.5] and 3.5 mm [US 4].
Gauge: 32 sts = 10 cm [4 in] on 3.5 mm [US 4] needles.
Notions: Scrap yarn to mark the thumb, stitch markers.

Women’s size:
Size: Length 29 cm [11.5 in], circumference 18 cm [7 in].
Main colour: Grænbrúnn (green-brown), 42 g [1.5 oz].
Contrast colour: Ljósgrænn (light green), 32 g [1.1 oz].

Men’s size:
Size: Length 32 cm [12.5 in], circumference 23 cm [9 in].
Main colour: Grænbrúnn (green-brown), 50 g [1.75 oz].
Contrast colour: Ljósgrænn (light green), 40 g [1.4 oz].
